Palace of Art Triennale

The Triennale’s working field covers urban planning, decorative art, design, handicraft, industrial production, fashion, audio-visual communication and a great many other artistic expressions. A new permanent display area was designed to house both the exhibitions promoted by the Triennale itself as well as exhibitions resulting from international collaborations with different institutions and museums. Located on the ground floor of Giovanni Muzio’s Palace of Art, the gallery - designed by Gae Aulenti, together with Piero Castiglioni who devised the lighting system - had to be fitted with air conditioning and technical systems (electrical, security alarm systems and fire signaling), to comply with the regulations in force concerning the security of both works and visitors. Consisting of a large central hall and four side rooms, the gallery is marked off by a number of partition walls which make it possible to hold several exhibitions at the same time. The flexibility required by the space was obtained through the use of plasterboard walls supported by metal frames fastened to the ground or to the outer walls of the building.
